Garage Door Security — Theft and Invasions of Garage Doors Have Become a Growing Menace |

January 25, 2006 By: John Wright Garage Door Security — Theft and Invasions of Garage Doors Have Become a Growing MenaceGarage door security has become more important these days than when there were simple wooden doors fitted with manual locks. We know things have changed a lot during the last decade, for example there are automatic garage doors with garage door openers (GDOs). After 1992, every automatic garage door should be equipped with automatic reversing mechanisms that sense obstructions and send doors back up if they hit something while closing. May it be your pet or your young children—even a wooden block of 2 inch is sufficient enough to be detected by these sensors! So as a result they have become safer now, but what about security? Are they secured enough against threats from intruders and thieves? People have become much smarter and already know how to beat the technology, as almost daily we heard about password hacking and code breaking. The same holds true in case of GDOs as new code grabbing devices make it possible for criminals to grab your code as you operate the door. Later, when you aren’t at home they can access your garage and can enter the entire house conveniently. Therefore, security of your garage door is under threat these days. Today garage doors security has become the first and foremost concern of the every homeowner because of growing number of cases related to door breaking, entrapment due to poor opening mechanisms, garage thefts and other crimes. In today's society, with our busy lives, automatic home security is even more important than ever, since with our variable schedules, someone is sure to forget to lock up before leaving. Garages are the main path of unauthorized entry in the house because it is very easy to break the locking code of an automatic garage door (as most of these systems have preset code that is easy to break). Specialized garage door openers and rolling code remotes are considered to be the best choices to automatically lock the garage door every time it is closed, and unlock it before it is opened. One element of home security and protection is to make the lockup procedure automatic with “variable coding” or “rolling code”. In addition to that a padlock with a hasp and staple on the inside is an effective way of improving garage security. Alternatively, you can add a mortice lock to double garage doors with a rim latch. In the modern hi-tech world, automation has taken the lead in almost every sphere of life. Today these garage doors are company-fitted with state-of-the-art locking and opening mechanisms for added safety and security. Fortunately, there are many automated garage door security systems in the market such as Gaplock from AST. Few years back, in the 2003 International Door Association EXPO in San Antonio, AST unveiled a pluggable version of Gaplock designed with the installer in mind. This new security system operates with the garage door opener (GDO) by simply plugging both i.e. Gaplock and the GDO, into a control module. It eliminates any need to wire it in with the GDO and really easy to get installed in less than 15 minutes. Similarly, you can find other security locks and devices such as garage defender locks.
