Garage Door Safety – Few Simple Steps To Ensure Your Safety

Take a few minutes to inspect and test your garage door system once a week or even once in a month. Because, few simple garage door safety precautions can protect your family and friends from potential harms. Make monthly inspection and testing a part of your regular routine. To make sure safety related to garage door is not a rocket science as few simple steps can solve all your related problems. First of all, always buy a professionally built garage door from a reputed company whose products are certified and approved from a law enforcement agency or other organizations, such as CPSC, UL, ISO and CREIA. Their quality and safety standards are very stringent and help ensure the proper functioning and risk associated with garage door, door opening and locking mechanisms. Read the owner’s manual carefully specific to the model you own, take a few minutes in the beginning to read all the garage doors safety and maintenance tips and educate your children and other family members about the safe use of your garage door.

Let’s see other garage door safety precautions: Check all the fitting and components at a regular interval, say every 30 days, to make sure they are functioning properly. If any problem is discovered or even sensed, disconnect the automatic opener as specified in the owner’s manual until repair is complete. Have a qualified technician to check whether your older unit needs replacement or readjustment. Most of the newer units are already equipped with automatic door reversing feature but with older door openers many were never designed with automatic safety reverse. So, with these outdated doors and fixtures, replacement of the entire unit is the safest recommendation. No matter how efficient your garage door system may be, but never stand or walk under a moving door! Do not let children play near the garage door and educate them regarding the proper use and functioning.

No doubt, garage doors are some of the largest and heaviest moving parts in any home and a large number of accidents and injuries are caused by them, so utmost care should be given to make sure they are safe. Many voluntary organizations and government agencies have come forward to impart the necessary education and enforce many laws for residential as well as commercial garage doors. For example, since 1993 federal law in the United States requires that all residential garage door openers sold in the country must include an automatic door reversing mechanism to protect against entrapment of moving objects or persons. Generally, these automatic openers have sensors or photoelectric eyes to detect anything that comes in between while door is moving. In case these sensors, detectors or photoelectric eyes are not working properly then garage door openers shouldn’t work. No doubt, automatic door opener is a great convenience, but its reverse mechanism is a vital life saving function. Therefore, reverse mechanism should be checked on a regular basis. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the National Safety Council and the Industry Coalition along with the California Real Estate Inspection Association provide important information for automatic garage door opener safety. Better to follow their recommendations and guidelines for garage door safety at your home.
